Because of inflamed retinal vasculature in my right eye, my vision has been deteriorating for several months.
The answer to the first question is, “Yes, I’m getting appropriate medical treatment.” The answers to the next n questions are, “We’re still trying to pinpoint the underlying cause(s), I don’t know how I’m supposed to treat it or what to expect next, and yes, it’s kind of scary." I’m a designer and visual artist, so losing my eyesight is basically my Big Nightmare.
While I can still see, and since I can alternate eyes to develop a detailed visual understanding of how my vision is presently being obscured, I wanted to record it in a way I could share with others - principally my opthalmologist, but also my family and friends.
It’s surprisingly hard to represent what’s in the process of becoming the new normal, but I think I’ve actually nailed it here, in that these are very true to my experience. The top image is "normal” and the bottom image is what the same scene looks like to me, at this point. As you can see, it’s not totally debilitating (although during particularly bad flareups, more of my field of vision is obscured, and that can be debilitating), but it is very unnerving.
In other news, I appear to be in otherwise excellent physical condition. Which you’d think would be great, but who’s to know what to make of anything.
Aging is weird.
